In Her Shoes - Olivia Sandelman

Sandelman pulls on a checkered Balenciaga blazer she bought because it looked like something a used car salesman might wear. There are no fancy plans for the afternoon; she’ll be in class or on her Indo board (a stationary balance board to practice surfing). Still, she dresses up every day designer handbags cheap, believing, she says designer handbags cheap, in fashion’s transformative powers. “Whenever I pick out my clothes in the morning, I imagine I’m Holden Caulfield’s girlfriend.”

Now 22, a comparative literature major in her senior year at Columbia, the Upper East Side beauty admits to “having a torrid love affair with Leo.” As in Tolstoy, though she occasionally cheats, she says, with Virginia Woolf. This is not an unusual reference for a woman who loves her books, her music (she wakes every morning to the Temptations’ “Greatest Hits,” which is second only in her affections to Nirvana’s “Nevermind”; she has an original Elizabeth Peyton watercolor of Kurt Cobain on her mantel) and her wardrobe. On this day she has flung a vintage navy Givenchy coat over a ruffled, yellow chiffon dress paired with brown suede booties.

What is unique about Sandelman’s style is her intense knowledge and passion. Her wardrobe includes antique pieces from Madame Grès, World’s End, Azzedine Alaïa and Yves Saint Laurent designer handbags cheap, as well as newer collectibles from Prada, Balenciaga and Ralph Lauren and, of course, go-to classics like Acne jeans and Belgian loafers.

“Feet!” her mother yells from the other room.

Olivia Sandelman started collecting vintage fashion when she was in the eighth grade. Her first find was a green suede Jean Muir skirt that she wore on Fridays when she was free not to wear her Spence uniform. During her freshman year in college, the real-life Gossip Girl (so documented in Vanity Fair) wore only old, striped boat necks and black jeans because, she says cutely, “I thought I was Jean Seberg — lame, I know.”

In between eating grapes and Good & Plenty’s, Sandelman has changed into a super-short Burberry Prorsum chiffon dress. “I chopped this off,” she says referring to its hem. How many inches?
