Little Marc Goes Long

Marc Jacobs did not apply the same degree of strictness to his Marc by Marc Jacobs collection (or Little Marc, as we like to call it) today as he did in his signature collection shown last night. But it did look more oriented toward grown-ups than usual, certainly with more tweedy pantsuits and long-sleeve silk dresses and less of the playful sportswear.

The collection, in the color palette and styling, had more in common with the designer’s show from spring, which was a romp through the 1970s. The first look was a gold leather cardigan jacket shown over a shiny blouse (described in the notes as “multi disco satin”) and wide-leg herringbone pants. Almost all of the dresses had high necklines and long sleeves, a fresh and welcome direction that we’ve also started to notice even young starlets wearing on Hollywood red carpets. Some were shown in shiny velvet with zigzag stripes, and the news in prints was a scene of running impalas shown on a dress, a silk top and a purse.

The big hit of the show, judging by tweets, was a long multistriped camel swing coat, but there was more cool outerwear as well, notably a navy trench coat that was more of a jacket, really, since it was cropped at the waist.
